Spencer was born into a farming family. At one point, his family needed him to run the harvesting operations at the Acampo ranch and care for his seriously injured father. While doing so, Spencer started a few beehives. Through trial and error, Spencer learned about the fine art of beekeeping. Eventually the bees became an obsession for him. Bob worked in the insurance business for 25 years before becoming a knife sharpener. He always loved sharpening knives at home, and was eventually asked to sharpen knives for the chefs at the natural foods store where his wife Jill worked. From there, his business steadily grew, and knife sharpening eventually became a full-time profession.
