PRODUCTS: Dry beans, butter beans, fava beans, English shelling peas, green beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, chard, leeks, potatoes, and zucchini

Note: Brussels sprouts and artichokes are brought from neighboring Cabrillo Farm during the winter season.

FARMLAND: 165 leased acres in Half Moon Bay, about 35 miles from Ferry Plaza Farmers Market

PEOPLE: Louis Iacopi and his son, Mike Iacopi, along with 2 full-time and 15 seasonal employees

FARM HISTORY/PHILOSOPHY: Upon his arrival from Italy in 1939, Louis' father, Michael, settled in Pescadero where he learned the farming trade from his employer at Cascade Ranch. In 1962, Louis began his 40- year farming career and leased land to start a 200-acre farm in Half Moon Bay. He farmed there until 1979 when he moved the farm to its current location.

According to the Iacopis, the cool, coastal climate is ideal for growing flavorful peas and beans and they pride themselves on their high quality. Until recently, he grew produce mainly for the wholesale markets, but low returns from wholesale buyers encouraged him to sell more of his produce directly to the consumer through the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. Now he sells about 50% of his produce to wholesale and 50% at the market.

SOIL: The land's proximity to the coast results in many soil types - from heavy clay to sandy loam. Cover crops, manures, and commercial fertilizers are used to improve soil structure.

WEED CONTROL: Mechanical and hand cultivation. Herbicides are used minimally, only if necessary, which usually occurs in the winter when the ground is too wet for the tractors.

PEST MANAGEMENT: Crop rotation and use of disease-resistant seeds minimize pest outbreaks. Pesticides are not used.

WATER USE: Overhead sprinkler irrigation. Water is collected as it runs off neighboring hillsides into an on-site pond.

ORGANIC CERTIFICATION: None

FUN FACT: The location of one of the Iacopis' plots of land is very unusual: between landing strips and surrounding the Half Moon Bay Airport!
