Volunteer of the Month: Ann Adams

CUESA’s Volunteer of the Month program recognizes the dedication and work of some of our most active volunteers. CUESA relies on volunteers to help with education programs, special events, public outreach, and other activities that help fulfill our mission to cultivate a sustainable food system. Volunteer Kendra Adams Lee introduced her mom Ann Adams to volunteer at CUESA. Retired from a career in the printing industry and inspired by CUESA’s support of local businesses and farms, Ann has taken advantage of her flexible schedule and has volunteered in the CUESA office to support fundraising events, such as CUESA’s Sunday Supper, since 2017.

“Ann has been a great help behind the scenes,” says Volunteer and Special Projects Coordinator Cindy Mendoza. “We love that she’s game for any task set before her – from preparing volunteer aprons to sending out thank you notes. I’m glad she enjoys a leisurely ferry ride to the office and helps us out for a full afternoon. She’s a great steady worker and will enlighten us about the ins and outs of printing. I’m always happy to celebrate folks like Ann, who truly provide much-needed support to our work. ” Meet Ann.

CUESA: Where does your interest in food come from?

Ann: My parents lived through the Great Depression and they still had some food worries in my childhood. Perhaps that is why I was a very timid eater in my younger years. Once I started traveling for business, I realized that I needed to “get over” my squeamishness and become more adventuresome. I believe I am still on that journey.

CUESA: What do you do when you aren’t volunteering for CUESA?

Ann: I go visit my family, who are in several locations on both coasts. This is one of the great perks of retirement.

CUESA: Do you have any favorite or memorable experiences volunteering with us?

Ann: The recent volunteer appreciation tour and DIY pizza making party at Eatwell Farm was a highlight. It was a beautiful day with a delicious meal and getting acquainted with some friendly chickens. I have also enjoyed getting to know the other volunteers and the staff, especially Cindy.

CUESA: Do you have an insider market tip or a favorite produce item at the market right now?

Ann: I love the brilliant colors of California’s fruits and vegetables. The Bay Area does have its challenges, but seeing the bounty at the market reminds me of how lucky we are to live with such abundance.
