Locally Grown, Locally Sewn: A Discussion about Sustainable Apparel

The desire for healthy, sustainable, locally produced food has become part of the national conversation. But do you know who grew and made your jeans? What about the sheep raised for the wool in your sweater? Join CUESA for a discussion about how to encourage local, environmentally friendly, humane, and socially just textile production. The panel will feature three women who are working to build a sustainable fiber system here in California.

  • Rebecca Burgess is the author of Harvesting Color and founder of Fibershed, a community of fiber farmers, weavers, and other artisans who envision a bioregional textile culture. Rebecca is currently working on a project called Grow Your Jeans, in which jeans will be produced almost entirely in Northern and Central Californiaeven the indigo dye!
  • Robin Lynde of Meridian Jacobs Farm is a shepherd, weaver, and teacher who has a fiber shop on her Vacaville farm, where she teaches classes in spinning, weaving, and dyeing. 
  • Marcia Gibbs is the executive director of the Sustainable Cotton Project, which promotes sustainably grown domestic cotton by working with growers to reduce chemical use and developing a Cleaner Cotton™ supply chain. Marcia also has a Masters in business and has been a family farmer in the Sacramento Valley.

The panel will take place on Monday, October 22, 2012, in the Port Commission Hearing Room, second floor of the Ferry Building. The panel will run from 6:00-7:30 pm, with a 30 minute reception and book signing afterwards.
