Sana Javeri Kadri, Diaspora Co.

Saturday, July 14, 2018 - 10:30am to 11:15am

Stop by the CUESA Classroom for a cooking demo featuring the seasonal bounty of the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market.

Diaspora Co is a queer, woman-of-color owned business that moves forth in the spirit of radical community, matriarchy, and social justice, intending on truly creating change through food systems.
They are here to put money, equity and power in the hands of Indian farmers, and to disrupt and decolonize a colonial, outdated commodity spice trading system that profits only the trader.

Sana Javeri Kadri is the wide eyed captain of this turmeric yellow ship, sometimes also referred to as founder, chief feelings officer, or head gremlin. As a freshly minted member of the Indian diaspora in the United States, Sana found herself asking a lot of big questions as she encountered race, class, gender and social status on this foreign continent. Being a “person of color”,”Asian-American”, a part of the American art world, a cook in a racialized kitchen- none of these labels really fit, or truly translated her experience as a young woman raised in Mumbai, India in the 90s, trying to find her way in neoliberal America. It wasn’t until a college professor gave her the term post-colonialism, and led her in the direction of literature, art and research around the subject, that she felt like she had finally found the language that her identity most easily translated into. Post-colonialism responds to the cultural legacy of colonialism and the structural extraction of resources, knowledge and capital through imperialism.

All demos take place in the CUESA Classroom (under the white tents in front of the Ferry Building) and are free to the public, with recipes and samples for all.
