The Food Change | Seeding Resilience

Monday, February 25, 2019 - 6:00pm to 8:00pm

“Each seed is … a genetic call and response, a story yet to be written,” argues journalist and author Mark Schapiro. “Add three basic ingredients—soil, water, and sun—and the story unfolds.” But today we live in a time when all of these life-giving ingredients, and the seeds themselves, are being radically altered under the pressures of corporate consolidation of the food chain. These dramatic manipulations of the earth, compounded by climate change, are hurling humanity through an unprecedented story.

Saving seeds builds resilience. Planting the seeds of our ancestors promotes flavor, nutrition, and variety in our food supply. Heirloom seeds have been nurtured, preserved, and passed down by farmers for centuries. And it is thoughtful farmers, dedicated to building a hopeful future, who are sowing seeds of resilience.

Join farmer Kristyn Leach and author Mark Schapiro in conversation with Real Food Reads podcast host Tiffani Patton as they dig into Mark’s latest book and several short films on the power of seeds in the good food movement. Be a part of the first in a series of talks diving into the themes of The Food Change, a new multifaceted educational project from CUESA.

Co-presented with Real Food Media, this conversation will also be recorded for an episode of Real Food Reads, a monthly book club and podcast.
