Stop by the CUESA Classroom for a book talk and cooking demo featuring the seasonal bounty of the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. 

Shanta Nimbark Sacharoff grew up in Gujarat, India and came to the United States in 1964 to attend college in New York. Shanta moved to San Francisco in 1973, where she became active in the Food Conspiracy, an organization of food buying clubs. Shanta later became a founding member of The San Francisco Bay Area’s Peoples Food System, that created several food distributing venues and community store fronts like Rainbow Grocery. She later became co-owner of Other Avenues, a worker-owned food cooperative in San Francisco’s Sunset District where she worked for more than three decades.

Shanta is the author of a unique local history book called Other Avenues Are Possible: Legacy of the Peoples Food System, which describes the rise and fall of the New Wave food Coops. Shanta has written and published three cookbooks: Flavors of India, The Ethnic Vegetarian Kitchen, and Cooking Together, which she will reading from today. Shanta writes articles about food, nutrition and cooking for various publications. Shanta gives talks about cooking, nutrition, food politics and other food related issues. Shanta also teaches vegetarian cooking classes.

All demos take place in the CUESA Classroom (under the tents in front of the Ferry Building) and are free to the public, with recipes and samples for all.
