Amber and Stella Balakian, Balakian Farms

Saturday, August 13, 2022 - 10:30am to 11:15am

In celebration of National Farmers Market Week (August 7-13, 2022), stop by the Foodwise Classroom for a cooking demo featuring the seasonal bounty of the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market.

Balakian Farms was founded in 1925 by Zadig Balakian, an immigrant from Armenia. His eldest, John Balakian, continued farming. Owners of Balakian Farms are members of the Balakian Family. In the 1990’s, the farm transitioned to organic practices, and began growing heirloom tomatoes. In the summer, you can find our produce and products at the Bay Area farmer’s markets and several retailers. Farming is more than an occupation for Balakian Farms: it is a way of life. We seek to honor the past, and celebrate the future. Balakian Farms grows peaches, plums, nectarines, pluots, apricots, lemons, eggplant, Armenian cucumbers, pomegranates, persimmons, summer squash, and heirloom tomatoes.

Fourth-generation farmer Amber Balakian now runs the farm with her parents, Ginger and Clarence, and her grandmother, Stella. You can find Balakian Farms at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market on Saturdays.

All demos take place in the Foodwise Classroom (under the tents in front of the Ferry Building) and are free to the public, with recipes and samples for all.
