Food Access and Outreach Intern

CUESA (Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to growing thriving communities through the power and joy of local food.

Overview of Position

The Food Access and Outreach Intern will support programming to help low income shoppers gain access to fresh produce by raising awareness of the CalFresh and Market Match programs in CUESA markets and educating shoppers about budget-friendly eating. The Food Shed and Kids Corner take place Thursday evenings at the Mission Community Market in San Francisco and Sundays at the Jack London Square Farmers Market in Oakland. Every week we host rotating tastings, recipes and education about easy and seasonal cooking techniques as well as a project for kids. Each month features a different theme and is designed to engage shoppers through fun and approachable bites, displays, hands-on activities, and conversation. 

The Food Access and Outreach Intern is responsible for the planning and operation of the Food Shed and Kids Corner at the Thursday and Sunday markets and the development of additional Food Shed content, including recipes, nutrition education, food prep, and activities for kids, with the support of the Market Access and Programs Coordinator.


  • Teach shoppers about market produce, nutrition, easy cooking techniques, and incentive programs within the market
  • Engage children in fun produce- and nutrition-themed activities 
  • Set up and break down the booth, track numbers of visitors
  • Assist CUESA staff with development of new recipes and activities
  • Make suggestions and help to implement program improvements
  • Update and design signage 
  • Other projects may be completed as agreed upon by the intern and CUESA

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • A desire to share information about cooking, nutrition, and sustainable food systems
  • Familiarity with sustainable agriculture and local food systems
  • Experience in food prep and service desired
  • Experience in education or community outreach desired
  • Experience working with kids and youth desired
  • Creativity, resourcefulness, and a strong eye for design desired
  • Ability to speak multiple languages a plus
  • Familiarity with Mission and/or Oakland communities a plus

Hours and Duration

Late February–end of May 2020, 15 hours per week. The intern must be available to work on Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. and/or Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with other weekday scheduling to be arranged.


The Food Access and Outreach Intern reports to the Market Access and Programs Coordinator. This is an unpaid internship, but the rewards include a vibrant workplace, immersion in a sustainable food system community and nonprofit environment, and communication and education experience.
