In botany, berries are the ripened ovaries of flowers; a berry’s seeds are embedded in the flesh of the fruit. Examples of edible berries are tomatoes, eggplants, persimmons, and dates. None of the foods we generally refer to as berries are the real botanical thing. A strawberry, for example, is called an accessory fruit by botanists. The sweet red flesh of a strawberry certainly acts like a fruit, but the tiny yellow seeds on its surface are the true fruits of the plant.
