Figs in Port Syrup

Source:

Mani Niall, cookbook author.

This quick sauce pairs well with many types of desserts–custards, plain cheesecake, crème brulee, pudding or lemon tarts. A simple slice of sponge cake or pound cake will soak up the flavorful juices, and a little ice cream alongside couldn’t hurt. In a pinch, serve over your favorite ice cream for a refreshing end to a meal.

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

½ cup dried or fresh figs
½ cup Port
2 teaspoon honey
1 teaspoon butter

PREPARATION

  1. Cut the figs in half or quarters. Soak the figs in the port for at least an hour. (If using fresh figs, strain and set them aside while reducing the port).

  2. Place in a small pan along with the honey and bring to a simmer for a few minutes, until the liquid has reduced by one third. Remove from the heat and stir in the butter.
