Lucky Dog Hot Sauce

Scott Zalkind and his Labrador mix, Lucky, along with 2 part-time employees.

From hobby to business, Lucky Dog was started by Scott Zalkind in 2012, with a focus on flavor over heat, while sourcing from California farms. After working many stressful years in health care project management, Scott made the leap into food and began pursuing his passion for hot sauce. Within six months, his sauces had received awards from competitions in Texas, Louisiana, and New York. Lucky Dog’s eight hot sauce varieties have amassed over 70 awards, and is distributed in 20 states, as well as Australia and England. The line currently includes nine sauces, with complex flavor profiles and varying levels of spice. (And yes, there is a dog named Lucky!)

Scott is passionate about recipe development and creates new sauces in his Hayward-based kitchen using California-sourced ingredients. Apples from Sebastopol, peppers from Morgan Hill, and figs from Santa Rosa bring out robust and unique flavors in his sauces. About 80% of his ingredients are locally sourced, and he uses no artificial flavors or chemicals.

Fun Fact

Lucky Dog is proud to support local charities, art galleries, and animal shelters, and sends monthly care packages to troops stationed overseas.
