These are Catalán Farm's delicious strawberries. They replant them every two years, never in the same place. This rotation helps reduce pathogen problems.
It's unusual to see strawberries growing without black plastic covering the ground. The plastic mulch is commonly used to reduce weeds, retain moisture, and keep the berries off the moist earth. It also warms the soil. Juan says the heat retention under the black plastic during their hot Hollister summers would be detrimental to the plants.
